Dr. Stephen Varney is a general dentist with a focus on family, cosmetic, and reconstructive dentistry. He has a particular interest in oral medicine and in caring for patients with complex medical histories. Dr. Varney is also deeply engaged in emerging dental technologies, evidence-based research, and modern techniques, enabling him to provide patients with the most current, high-quality care. He has been recognized as a "Top Dentist" by both Washingtonian and Bethesda Magazine and serves on the medical staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital, where he regularly treats patients.

Dr. Varney believes dental care should be both comfortable and built on trust. He takes time to listen carefully and educate his patients, developing personalized treatment plans in partnership with them. He also collaborates closely with physicians and specialists to ensure each patient receives the highest standard of comprehensive care.

Born at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Dr. Varney is proud to continue serving a community with a strong healthcare tradition. He was raised in Bethesda and graduated from Walter Johnson High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Georgetown University and began his career in scientific and pharmaceutical litigation support with DC law firms. Seeking a more personal connection with his work, he returned to school to pursue dentistry.

At the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Dr. Varney was recognized by both the Maryland Academy of General Dentistry and the American Association of Oral Medicine for his proficiency in clinical care and patient management.

Outside the office, Dr. Varney enjoys running, rowing, and finding any excuse to be outdoors. He lives in Kensington with his wife and their three active sons.

Dr. Gopalan was born and raised in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She found her passion for dentistry in southwest Virginia while volunteering at a dental clinic through Remote Area Medical. Dr. Gopalan believes every patient deserves access to quality dental care and is known for taking the time to listen to concerns, explain treatment options and support a positive experience. Her dedication has earned her recognition from her colleagues as a Washingtonian "Top Dentist."

She received her undergraduate degree at UVA-Wise with a Mathematics Major and Spanish Minor. Following undergrad, she received a Master's in Biomedical Science with an Oral Biology concentration from Rutgers University. Dr. Gopalan served for six months as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department in Parkersburg, West Virginia and then went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from West Virginia University's School of Dentistry. As a dental student, she received the International College of Dentists' Humanitarian Award for outreach.

After graduation, she completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at the Martinsburg, West Virginia Veterans Affairs Hospital, where she treated medically compromised patients and focused on restoring dentition to full form and function.

Dr. Gopalan is on the medical staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital. She stays active in continuing education through several DMV study clubs. She is a member of the American Dental Association® and serves on the Legislative and Governmental Affairs Council for the Academy of General Dentistry.

A proud Washington, D.C. native, Dr. Anabel Kelso is dedicated to providing thoughtful, relationship-based dental care to the community that she grew up in.

Outside the office, Dr. Kelso loves exploring the D.C. area with her friends and family and keeps active and engaged by solving crossword puzzles, reading mystery novels, and Peloton-ing. She cherishes time with her husband, Peter, who ensures she remains a loyal Washington Capitals and Texas Longhorns fan.
